Florida Panther
As Florida struggles through this recession the endangered Florida panther has benefited. Even though the panther is that state animal, some people are asking if trying to save the animal will impede the progress of more development. Because of the foreclosed or unsold homes people are starting to make plans for new communities. The panther needs a lot of room to survive and there territories have been over lapped by the human communities. With the 100 panthers left alive cars have become a major problem for these animals, in 2009 alone there was 8 Florida panthers killed by cars.

The Florida Panther is Florida's state animal. It is estimated that only 80 Florida Panthers remain in the wild. The Florida Panther was placed on the endangered species list in 1967. About 30 to 35 juvenile and adult Florida Panthers wear radio collars as part of the Florida Panther Recovery Program. Florida Panther Fun Facts:
Adult male Panthers defend territories of around 200 sq. miles while female Panthers have territories of around 75 sq. miles.
Female Panthers generally have a litter of 1 to 3 kittens every other year.
Mothers stay with their young for about 1.5 to 2 years.
Males weight around 120 pounds and are 7 ft long from nose to end of tail. (Panther's tails are 2/3 of their body length.)
Panthers can leap more than 15 feet and can run 35 miles per hour for short distances.
Panthers like to eat deer and wild pigs.
Historically Florida Panthers lived in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee and some think they reached into Texas. Today they only live in parts of Southern Florida including the Everglades and the Big Cypress Swamp. The Florida Panther is threatened by the destruction of their habitat, collisions with automobiles, and genetic defects caused by extensive inbreeding. The US Fish & Wildlife Service and many private organizations are fighting to save the Florida Panther from extinction. Humans are the main threat to the jaguar. A jaguar seldom, if ever, attacks humans unless it is cornered. Humans hunt the jaguar for sport, for its spotted hide, and to protect their domestic stock. The jaguar is endangered because it is hunted for its fur. Jaguars are reputed to be so destructive of cattle and horses that the larger. Poaching jaguars by hunting is still a problem, as there is a great demand for their coats. Today, there is still poaching, but not nearly as common as before. During the sixties and seventies, around 18,000 jaguars were killed every year for their beautiful coat. Formerly prized furs, such as those from the leopard, cheetah, or jaguar, may no longer be hunted in the countries where they are indigenous, and many other countries forbid their importation. The Federal Endangerment Species Act prohibits the importation and sale of these furs in the United States. In addition, special laws that protect certain North American species are enforced in the United States and in Canada, and wildlife refuges have been set up for the purpose of protecting the jaguar. The jaguar is a beautiful and graceful animal; it needs protection and conservation measures so they don't become extinct.
